Outer Banks Beach Wheelchairs & Accessible Beach Rentals

Beach Wheelchairs on the Outer Banks

At Just For The Beach Rentals, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to experience the beautiful beaches of the Outer Banks. While we no longer offer beach wheelchair rentals directly, we want to help visitors find the specialized equipment and local resources they need to enjoy their beach vacation.

Fortunately, several Outer Banks communities provide beach wheelchairs through local fire departments or ocean rescue programs, often free of charge. Independent rental providers also offer specialized beach wheelchairs for guests who need equipment delivered to their vacation homes.

Below are some helpful resources for locating beach wheelchairs in Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, and surrounding Outer Banks communities.

Free Beach Wheelchairs Through Local Fire Departments & Ocean Rescue

Many Outer Banks towns offer beach wheelchairs through public service programs. Equipment quantities may be limited, and eligibility, reservations, pickup requirements, and service areas vary. We recommend contacting the appropriate department well before your vacation to confirm availability.

Southern Shores Beach Wheelchairs

The Southern Shores fire department provides information about beach wheelchair availability for visitors and residents. Contact the department at 252-261-2272 to inquire about the local program and request arrangements.

Duck Beach Wheelchairs

For beach wheelchair availability in Duck, contact Duck Surf Rescue at 252-982-6747. Ask about current availability, eligibility, and how to arrange use during your visit.

Kitty Hawk Beach Wheelchairs

The Kitty Hawk Fire Department provides beach wheelchairs free of charge to residents and visitors staying in Kitty Hawk. A Kitty Hawk address is required, and equipment is subject to availability. Contact the department at 252-261-2666 or visit the town’s Fire Department Services page for reservation information.

Kill Devil Hills Beach Wheelchairs

Kill Devil Hills Ocean Rescue provides beach wheelchairs free of charge for use within Kill Devil Hills. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Ocean Bay Boulevard Beach Access after 9:30 AM and must be returned each evening. Reservations are not accepted. Call 252-480-0080 for information or visit the town’s Ocean Rescue information page.

Nags Head Beach Wheelchairs

Nags Head Fire Rescue offers beach wheelchairs free of charge through Fire Station 16. Reservations are required, and the borrower is responsible for transporting the wheelchair. Availability is limited, so advance planning is especially important. Call 252-441-5909 or visit the town’s Beach Wheelchair program page.

Corolla Beach Wheelchair Resources

Visitors staying in Corolla should check with their vacation rental company or an independent mobility equipment provider for available beach wheelchair options. Publicly supplied equipment and access arrangements may vary by location. OBX Beach Mobility is one independent provider that lists scheduled wheelchair delivery to eligible Corolla addresses.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Beach Wheelchairs

Cape Hatteras National Seashore also offers beach wheelchairs at certain visitor centers and lifeguarded beach locations, subject to availability and seasonal arrangements. Contact the National Park Service at 252-473-2111 for current program information and locations.

Planning an Accessible Outer Banks Beach Visit

Finding a beach wheelchair is only one part of planning a comfortable visit. Beach access ramps, walkways, parking, beach matting, dune elevations, and access surfaces can differ significantly from one location to another.

Before arranging equipment, ask your vacation rental company or property manager about the specific beach access serving your vacation home. A beach wheelchair may be designed for sand, but some dune crossings or steep access routes may still present difficulties.

For additional information about accessible beach locations, public facilities, and mobility resources, visit the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau Accessible Travel Guide.

Does Just For The Beach Rentals Still Rent Beach Wheelchairs?

No. Just For The Beach Rentals has discontinued our beach wheelchair rental service. However, we are pleased to share these local resources to help visitors find specialized equipment from community programs and independent providers.

Availability, contact details, program requirements, and operating schedules may change. Please confirm all arrangements directly with the organization providing the wheelchair before your visit.
